Step-by-step

1. Confirm the final status on the transaction record and note any safe, customer-facing explanation.
2. Check for ordinary input issues without writing down or requesting full card details.
3. Ask the customer to verify information and contact their issuer if the decline persists.
4. Use a different valid payment method only when the customer chooses to do so.
5. Record the transaction ID and time if the result appears inconsistent or a technical error is also present.

Troubleshooting

• Do not run rapid repeated attempts; allow the customer to review the issue first.
• Distinguish a declined transaction from a browser or network failure by checking whether a transaction ID exists.
• If an error code is visible, preserve the code but redact sensitive surrounding details.

If the result changes after a check, record what changed and the exact time. That detail is often more useful than repeating every step.

Before contacting support

Prepare the smallest set of information needed to explain the issue. Redact passwords, one-time codes, API keys, authorization headers, CVVs, full card numbers, and full bank account details.
